History
In 1976, Renewal was incorporated as a private, non-profit organization. In the early 1980s, Judge Maurice Cohill issued a court order limiting the number of inmates that could be housed in the Allegheny County Jail in Western Pennsylvania. In August 1986, Renewal, Inc.'s Board of Directors submitted a proposal, in response to Allegheny County's RFP for "two 25-bed work release facilities for men." Since then, Renewal, Inc. has provided alternative housing and rehabilitation services to residents from a wide variety of jurisdictions.
