Employee Profile

“I started my career in corrections in 1997, right after graduating from college and also two months after having my son. A family friend pointed me to a position as a monitor at the Program for Female Offenders helping women get ready for life outside of incarceration and developing the tools to live better lives. While working at that position, 9/11 happened. That tragedy had a huge impact on me. I wanted to be of service to my country and since both my father and step father were Vietnam War vets, military service was something I knew and respected. I was an Army reservist for three years, but realized that military life was not conducive to raising my son as a single mom, so I continued on with my career in corrections, where I could still help people and make a difference.

I loved the work and after eight years I took what I learned from Female Offenders to Renewal, Inc., where I began as a case manager and eventually was promoted to managing the programming at Lydia’s Place®. Throughout my 12 years with Renewal, I’ve had wonderful mentors who have helped me learn about boundaries and ethics and learning to help people help themselves. It’s never lost on me that I’ve lived a parallel life to many of the people I’ve work with; I grew up in Homewood, around addiction, alcoholism and unemployment – those factors were never far away, but it was education, hard work, and a supportive family that made the difference for me and I’m truly blessed.

One of the best things about working for Renewal has been the organization’s willingness to help employees find their passion and focus. If you demonstrate an honest interest in a particular area, Renewal will find a way to give you an opportunity to explore it, and I think that’s one of the best ways to discover your passion and find out what makes you happy and fulfilled.”
